Looking for a way to run Linux without the hassles of installation? Run Linux right from your CD drive. Maximum PC has tested various packages and narrowed down to just three.
Knoppix www.knoppix.net
Gentoo Linux www.gentoo.org
Gentoo Linux www.gentoo.org
Ubuntu www.ubuntu.com
Knoppix has been very useful at work, where I test computer equipment. It loads in a jiffy and can be customized if installed on the hard drive. The installation process is terribly complicated.
Gentoo Linux doesn’t have the ease of use but delivers mind boggling performance. The speed could make windows look like a tortoise.
My personal preference is Ubuntu. It allows you install the operating system on the hard drive; has a simple package management; and even has automatic updates.
Just download and burn the Live CD. And you are ready to go. If you need help post your contact details.

wow… as far as i am used to Linux, associating ‘instant’ with ‘gentoo’ is not really that inspired. maybe lately with the release of 2006.1, gentoo became more like ubuntu and knoppix (installable live cd), but still, to get that mind blowing performance from gentoo a thorough stage1/2 is required, and that is not really trivial.
ps: the live cd of 2006.1 comes with the default gnome desktop, which is not really useful for hard core kde fans
as a conclusion, i would really recommed the Kubuntu 6.06.1 (or wait few more weeks and get 6.10 this month)
I guess Knoppix is the most user-friendly version =o)
I’m going to check out kubuntu soon. Knoppix is user-friendly but makes a full installation, a nightmare.
I like Ubuntu, but it seems to take forever for the live disk to load.
My personal favourite is Fedora Core 6….it has a small problem with installation but the package is really awesome…got to have it
What was the problem with the installation? Is it with a dual boot option?
